Villy Doctor was born in Mumbai in a Parsi (Zorastrian) family. Her parents were a devout and God loving couple who instilled in her strong values of love, compassion, generosity and integrity. Her precocious young mind grasped it all and began to seek ways to live these values.

At 7 years of age she expressed it in a school poem competition
My Wish
Some wish for many things,
For gold and silver rings,
To have a Rolls Royce blue,
And lovely dresses too,
But I have a better wish,
The one that I relish,
More than tasty food,
I wish to be honest and good.
She won the first prize for this poem and throughout her life has lived up to this promise she made herself.
The seeds of a future trust were already sown and gradually began to germinate. Her love for all humankind constantly grew and she began to help people through stress relief techniques of which she is a master. But this was not enough she needed to extend herself. She had a burning desire to help the under-privileged. Her creative mind saw a vision of bringing light into many lives and transforming them to happy empowered individuals.

One evening, sitting with old friends and like-minded friends she wistfully spoke of her vision and was delighted at spontaneous support it received.

After careful consideration of all the factors involved, The Light of Life Trust came into being in 2002. She wanted to open her arms to the world, but practicality prevailed and a focal point, the under-privileged in the country was established. The home state of Maharashtra was choosen in which Karjat, an area close to Mumbai city was the logical starting point for the trust to commence its activities. Villy began juggling between her home and activities in Mumbai and her extended family in Karjat. Her warmth and sincerity brought many to the flock. The fledgling trust began to receive funding from well-wishers with which it purchased land in Karjat, an area at the base of the Sahyadri mountains on the west coast, in a village called Tiware. Its first employee was Sudhir Kumar Gajbhiye, a dynamic young man from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, a premier institute of social sciences in the country.

Sudhir Kumar brought to his task extraordinary passion and dedication. The Light of Life Trust was for him, a dream come true. His began to interact with the local village communities and learn of their immediate needs. The villagers had seventeen requirements one of which was education for their children.

The drop out rate in the village was high and poverty dire. Education was seen as a prime need and Project Anando came into being. 25 children were selected for this pilot project. By leaps and bounds the the Light of Life gained the trust and confidence of parents and guardians. It literally became the lifeline of its beneficiaries. Today, Anando is the proud parent of 1041 children and more are on the way!

The second area of service is holistic community projects termed as Awakening (Jagriti), They are initiated and are proceeding in a phased manner.

Alongside, some land was also purchased at Gorai, Uttan, which, is a seaside town. This has been earmarked for alternate healing, hospice and research centre because of its naturally bracing air and pleasing surroundings.
